Is copyright and intellectual property the same?
Differences between copyright and intellectual property
Copyright and intellectual property are not the same. They are related but different terms within the legal scope that covers the protection of intellectual creations.
- Copyright specifically refers to the legal protection afforded to authors of original creative works, such as books, music, movies, artistic works, software, and other types of artistic or literary expression.
For example, a book itself is protected by copyright, but the ideas or concepts within the book are not. Copyright gives the creator exclusive control over the reproduction, distribution, display, and adaptation of their work for a specified period of time. In many countries, this period of protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional period after his death.
- Intellectual property is a broader concept that encompasses copyright, related rights and industrial property.
